CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH

On March 24, 1991, Archbishop the Most Rev. Cecil DeSa officially invited the Vincentian Fathers to the Archdiocese and on November 10, 1991 a contract was signed between the VC and the Archdiocese. On February 2, 1992, Fr. Joseph Edattu, then the Provincial Superior, inaugurated the Vincentian Mission in a rented building at Budaun. Fr. Varghese Naikomparambil was the first Vincentian Priest at Budaun. In 1993, Fr. Thomas Emprayil took charge of the Mission and continued to work from a rented building till 2000. As the need of the mission was to promote literacy, a project was planned to open as many literacy centres as possible especially in interior villages with minimum investment. Neither was land bought nor buildings constructed, but literacy missions with the U.P. Board syllabus came up in spaces provided by Panchayat or villagers. Within a few years, 35 such Centers were functioning. In 2006, Fr. Benny Elemplakattu took charge of the literacy programme and continues to this day. Today, there is one School up to Class X and three Schools up to Class VIII with a total strength of 1795 students with a nominal fee of Rs. 10/- to Rs. 50/-. In 1997 De Paul School was opened in the city itself. The FCC Sisters extended their services in the mission. In the city of Budaun there was a British-built Church unused and neglected. From 1992 onwards Fr. Varghese and Fr. Thomas tried to get it for the Catholic community. Success came in 1999. A house was built in the one acre Church compound and the Fathers had the privilege of living in their 'own' house after eight years in rented buildings. The Church was renovated beautifully and re-consecrated as the Church of Christ the Redeemer by Archbishop Oswald Gracias. The Parish of Budaun consists of eight Catholic families.
