Our Lady of Snow Shrine

Kumbakonam Diocese • Tamil Nadu, India

Church History

Even though the Perambalur Parish was established in 1944, the church dates back nearly 100 years. From then this church has been called 'Church Of The Mother Of Snows'. One of the believers, Mr. Maria Suosai brought a statue of the 'Blessed Virgin Mary'. At that time Perambalur belonged to Palayam Parish. With the efforts of that Parish Priest, a small building was constructed in Perambalur and this statue was enshrined there, from the day, the 'Feast of The Mother of Snows' has been celebrated. The Mother's fame spread far and wide. The Justice Party won an election, defeating the Congress, mainly due to the support of the Christian community. Peeved by this defeat the opposition went to court alleging that the land claimed to be the property of the church was. In fact, government land, as there was no documentary proof to support the claim of the church to ownership, the Christian community was in difficulty. But, by the grace of the Mother, a stone inscription surfaced detailing the date of transfer. The fact that this land was gifted to the church by Santha Pillai and Raya Pillai, the members of the parish. When this was revealed to the court, the case was dismissed in favour of the Church. On that day, the stone inscription was fixed on the wall of the church. As the old church was inadequate to accommodate for the large gathering crowd, the foundation for the present church was laid on the 27th November 1961 and construction was completed on 21st April 1965. The New Church was Consecrated by the Bishop of Kumbakonam, the Rt. Rev. D. Paul Arulsamy, D.D., and dedicated to the 'Lady of Snows'. From then on, the church witnessed a huge rise in the influx of devotees. Having watched the phenomenal growth of the church, the Bishop, during the 150th jubilee year (25th March 1983 - 22nd April 1984) announced the church to elevate the potency to a level that ensured redemption and succour to those devotees who visited this shrine. Those who pray here with complete faith in the Lord and in the interceding power of the Mother, receive all that, what they ask for. Lord Jesus, through his Mother, bestows great boons and ensures both physical and mental well-being.
