St. Joseph's Church
Church History
A small chapel was built in 1986 for the seven families of the village. Mr. Joseph Soren was put in charge of the palce as catechist. Soon vested interest surfaced and brought down the chapel. Twelve years later there were 113 families including catechumens in the area. Thus a separate centre looked inevitable. In November 1996, Fr. Valerian Fernandes, the Parish Priest of Burdwan purchased a plot of land in view of building a sub-centre. Most of the land, however, was a large water tank. From 1997 Fr. Elias Frank began celebrating Eucharist in Mr. Munshi Murmu's courtyard, thus beginning the centre. Sr. Beena of Friends of Jesus, along with a candidate started staying at Gordanmari in a house donated by Mr. Paulus Soren from January 1997. On 19 August 1999 a covent house at Norja village for Sisters of the Friends of Jesus and on 8 September 1999 a small community Centre at Gordanmari were blessed by Bishop Cyprian Monis. A spacious community centre is also built in 2014. The new community center has a hall in the ground floor and the priests residence on the first floor and priests started residing there from 2015 onwards.
