St. Lucia’s Church
Church History
Kurumbur was a substation of Pragasapuram from 1880 onwards. For some time it was under Sathankulam. In 1909 when Pragasapuram was reorganized as a parish, Kurumbur became again one of the substations of Pragasapuram. Rev. Fr. Vikardy, a Jesuit priest, looked after the spiritual needs of the people.
On the 23rd September 1931 onwards Kurumbur was attached to the parish of Sethukuvaithan. On the 16th of June 1946 when Arumuganeri was erected as a separate parish, Kurumbur became a substation of Arumuganeri. On 14th June 1885, Kurumbur became a separate parish. The original Church of Kurumbur was built in Portuguese style. It was small in size. On 13.12.1931 foundation stone was laid for a new Church by Bishop Tiburtius Roche. Rev. Fr. Lourdes was the parish priest. Rev. Fr. S. Francis built the new Church. On 13.12.1966 the Church was blessed by Bishop Thomas Fernando. The presbytery was built by Rev. Fr. S. Francis and was blessed by Bishop S.T. Amalnather on 02.09.1987. The tower of the Church was blessed on 13.12.1991 by Bishop S.T. Amalnather when Rev. Fr. F. Irudayaraj Fernando was a parish priest. The Church was renovated by Rev. Fr. Johnson Raj and blessed by Bishop Yvon Ambroise on 9th March 2009.
