A Brief History
Theresapur is situated on the bank of the river Ganges to the north of Chunar in Mirzapur district. It was a Cantonment and called Sultanpur. His Lordship Dr. Angelo Pole had his eye on the place to open a mission station and an agricultural colony. This was his first Mission Station. He obtained land on lease and this mission was opened on October 30, 1918. It was dedicated to St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus with the hope she would take care of and have special interest in spreading the message of Christ. In November 1918 there came the first missionary in the person of Rev. Fr. Peter Mary, OFM Cap. Who resided at Chunar and regularly visited Theresapur. In March 1919 the Superior Regular of Capuchins thought of a residence for the missionaries. In January 1920 this was ready. On May 3, 1921 the first 25 converts were baptized; thence sisters of the third Order of St. Francis were brought to Theresapur. They began instructing women and giving medicines.
Later on Rev. Fr. Jeremiah OFM, Cap. Was appointed to this place. Along with him the Franciscan Brothers of Mt. Poinsur arrived to help him out. With the Italian declaration of War Fr. Jeremiah was sent to the internment camp; he was succeeded by Rev. Fr. Jerome, OFM Ca[/ (Camadoam ).Rev. Fr. Clarence Geary, a Diocesan Priest was sent as an Assistant for the mission. In November 1925, Bishop Angelo Pole blessed the present Convent and the School and dedicated it to the Little Flower. This was entrusted to the Canossian Daughters of Charity. During their short stay the sisters visited the villages instructing women and dispensing medicines. In1931 Sisters of the Queen of the Apostles (SRA) replaced the Canossians. The present school was started in 1948 by Rev. Fr. Faustine Alva.
This mission was handed over to the Indian Missionary Society (IMS) in the year 1985. They opened a house for the Formation of IMS Candidates.
