St. Thomas' Church
Church History
St. Thomas’ parish is situated near the parish of Our Lady of Snows Shrine Basilica.
Migrants from various villages got settled around the railway line which connected the old city of Thoothukkudi with the salt pans and the Catholics among these settlers put up a small Church with a tiled roof in the name of St. Thomas.
In the beginning, at the request of the people, only feast day masses were conducted in the place. Slowly people increased in number and there was a need for appointing a priest to take care of the spiritual needs of the people.
When Msgr. Joseph Rathinaraj was the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Snows Basilica, he made all preparations to make the area of Gandhi Nagar into a new parish.
The new Parish dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle at Gandhi Nagar was erected on 25th May 2003.
Rev. Fr. Amaladas Ignatius was the first parish priest.
The presbytery built by Msgr. Joseph Rathinaraj was blessed by Bishop Most. Rev. Peter Fernando on 20th April 2003.
The foundation for the Church was laid on 11th September 2001 and was blessed by Bishop Most. Rev. Peter Fernando on 25th May 2003.
