Church History

During the past 25 years Tiruppur, “The Hosiery City” has seen such a stupendous expansion, that many Catholic families settled in and around Bishop Ubagart Swamy High School. The Catholic families numbering 150, originally Textile-workers, settled down from the surrounding Christian Villages, in Kumar Nagar Area of Tiruppur where Bishop Ubagarasamy Higher Secondary School is situated. It had created a great need for a church in that area, because the town parish, St. Catherine’s Church, is nearly 2 Km away. The foundation stone was laid in 1978 by Bishop Visuvasani and the church was consecrated by Rt. Rev. M. Ambrose on 3rd July 1983, built by Fr. Dharmanathan. It was on the same day of the consecration, that the church was constituted as an independent parish, divided from the parish of St. Catherine, Tiruppur Town and Fr. Dharmanathan became the first parish priest. The church is dedicated to St. Joseph the Worker. The original school campus is now covered by new modern buildings, housing not only Bishop Ubagarasamy Higher Secondary School, through the hard work of Fr. Dharmanathar, who started an English Medium School in the name of St. Thomas. Later, during the time of Fr. Joseph Felix, the name was changed to Infant Jesus Matriculation School. Fr. Joseph Felix, Fr. M. Pancras, Fr. Lazar Sunder Raj and Fr. Jude Paul Raj toiled for the growth and development of the schools. Fr. Pius Savarimuthu and Fr. Marianathar were the Parish Priests exclusively for the Parish.
