St. Joseph's Church

Rev. Fr. Cyriac, SDB visited Laghata since 1980 from Joypur. He bought 19 decimal plot of land and built a mud chapel. Church service started from 1982. The community was neglected due to some reason. Presently the plot is used as a cemetery. Fr. Cyriac continued to visit Gumai village Casa Murmu of that village built a mud chapel in the plot of land. In the year 1993 Bolpur- Laghata area was handed over to Kolkata Diocese by the Salesian congregation. Fr. Valerian Fernandes was appointed as Priest in-charge of Bolpur- Laghata area. He regularly visited Laghata Gumai area to cater to the pastoral need. In the year 1994-95 Fr Joe Alexander SJ looked after the spiritual needs of the Catholic Community of Bolpur and Laghata area. In Oct 1995 Fr. Robert R. D' Souza was appointed as priest in- Charge of Bolpur and he visited Laghata Gumai villages. In 2000 a community Center with two rooms for priests' residence was built. A non-formal school with hostel facility was started for drop out tribal students. In 2001 Cluny of St. Joseph showed keen interest in the pastoral work and continued the nonforamal school at Laghata. The Cluny Sisters started an English Medium School with Hostel facility. In 2004, Fr. Robert bought the land at Dhobajole and built the community Center and the school. In the Year 2008 he shifted to Ahmedpur and continued his ministry in Laghata. In 2012 a new Community Hall was built in Laghata and Fr. Robert shifted his residence to Laghata in 2014. Category: DIOCESAN Catholic: 346
